ABOUT WEEKEND IN POLYNESIA
The Largest Polynesian festival in Long Beach draws thousands of locals and visitors every year to celebrate the Polynesian culture. Weekend In Polynesia will be held on August 25 & 26, 2018 at Recreation Park 4900 East 7th Street, Long Beach, CA, and is presented by The Pacific Talent Academy of the Arts (PTAA) a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
This FREE family-friendly event will include an International Tahitian Ori (“ITO”), a Tahitian Dance Solo Competition & Fire Knife Dance competitions, Polynesian Drums and a Hula exhibition, plus many more exciting dance and musical performances showcasing the cultures of Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, Guam and Native America. There will be a Polynesian Shopping Village, featuring cultural Arts and Crafts, as well as delicious Island Food vendors for visitors to enjoy.
For the past 14 years, PTAA has hosted the Largest Ito Competition and most prestigious Fire Knife Dance Competition in North America, bringing hundreds of the best Tahitian solo and Fire Knife Dancers from around the world. Preserving the legacy of the late Paramount Chief Olo Misilagi Letuli – the Father of the Fire Knife Dance. In honor of Chief Letuli, the PTAA will be presenting the Olo Letuli Lifetime Achievement award to two individuals who have been ambassadors of the Polynesian Arts for many years.
The ITO Competition will be held on 2-days. Saturday will showcase our Prime Contestants. Sunday will showcase the Elite Contestants followed by an awards ceremony for each day. The Fire Knife Semi-finals start at 7pm on Saturday night (8/25), and Finals start at 7pm on Sunday (8/26), followed by an awards ceremony. There will also be a praise and worship ceremony at 8am before the main event starts on Sunday morning.
